From the prairies in Southern Alberta comes one of Canada

songwriters, John Wort Hannam. For five years John Wort Hannam taught grade

9 language arts on the largest reserve in Canada – The Kainai Nation, part of the

Blackfoot Confederacy. But in 1997 he heard a Loudon Wainwright III record and

was hooked by the music and stories. In 1998 he bought a guitar and learnt

some chords. In 2002 he quit teaching and began to pursue the dream of being

a working musician. John has achieved some fine accolades in a few short years

in cluding a mainstage performance at the 2009 Kerrville Folk Fest, three Grand

Prizes at the Calgary Folk Fest Songwriting Competition, and numerous

nominations and awards. With comparisons to Gordon Lightfoot, James

Keelaghan, and John Prine, John Wort Hannam is a born story- teller with a keen

eye for the quirky and lyrics that create stories behind the songs.

The Intuitive Painter- A fluid and Heavy Body Acrylics Adventure

September 19, 2010 – Septmeber 24, 2010

It has been said that if you don’t listen to your intuition, it will stop talking to you, Nothing could be more true when it comes to painting. No matter your experience or techinical expertise, intuition is the guiding force behind creative fulfilment. Painting in both the studio and enplein air, this late-Septmeber island workshop will teach you about holding on and letting go, and the three essential qualities in all creative painting- patience, persistence and trust. By experimenting with acylic paints and stepping outside you comfort zone, intuition will take you into the limitless world of abstraction. Once there, wonderment will take hold. An out-of-this world trip of a lifetime.

Claudia is an elected member of the Society of Canadain Artists, a painter, a graphic artists and a dreamer. her painting and extensive teaching experience reflect her free spirit and joi de vivre.

August 8, 2010 August 13, 2010

Did you know that by goldmining your imagination, you reconnect with your unique creative source? By experimenting with fluid and heavy body acrylics, taking risks, and panhandling your creative energies, this workshop will help you to build and nuture trust, intuition, spontaneity, clarity and confidence. You will design and compose, exaggerate and simplify, add and subtract, and lose yourself in the magical mysteries of abstraction. By quieting the inhibitions and doubts that sometime derail our intentions to create, you will rediscover the yoy of playfulness. Gold of the soul!

Fashion Nuno Silk and Felt Scarves

July 15, 2010 to July 18, 2010

Conceive, explore and finish a piece of wearable art. Create your design and it’s yours to wear, using the ancient art of felt-making, with a twist. Nuno felting allows us to use small amounts of wool on silk fabric to make a extremely drapeable felt. We will combine very soft Merion wool on silk chiffon, with a wet felt technique. Each scraf will have natural fibre accents. No experience necessary. A materials fee of $50, payable to the instructor, provides wool fabric and silk fabric, along with supplies (which you take home with you).

Jackie Sylvester settled on Amherst Island, temporarily, 32 year ago, having worked with fabric for the previous decade. She was a weaver with Design Senior in the 70’s. Joining the Kingston Handweavers and Spinners eight years ago (segueing out of her career in residential design and finishing details), Jackie was seduced by her introduction to felting. she has been exploring the medium of felt for the past several years. She is also a novice spinner and gardener.

Code: Pain 8014-7039
Fee: $214.50 SR. $147.60

Accommodations at The Lodge are based on double occupancy only. This included room, breakfast and dinner, at a rate of $75.00 per person per night, plus applicable taxes.

Landscapes in Oil

July 4, 2010 to July 9, 2010

Demonstrations in the studio and outdoors focus on composing a painting from the outdoors-how to begin, from stetch and block-in to final details. Each day includes individual critiques. Weather premitting, we will paint on location at The Lodge and take field trips to locations on the island. Lucy will supplement classes with a supply of art books and videos to be enjoyed in the evening at The Lodge.

Lucy specializes in oils to capture the Ontario landscape in a loose painterly style, emphasizing colour and value. Her favorite subject is the traditional landscape, as well as the wilderness scences of northern Ontario. While working on location, she tries to capture the mood and feeling for the subject in that particular weather and at that particular time of day. She studied at Sir Sanford Fleming College and her works have recieved numerous awards at juried shows. Please note: This workshop is not suited to beginners, as you are expected to paint outdoors and need the proper “on location” equipment and at least some experience doing so. We will also paint indoors.

Fee: $357.50 SR. $246.00

June 11-13 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
Given the opportunity to make the most of available light, indoors and out, you can create striking images. For novice and more advanced digital photographers, this workshop will challenge you to work with existing light in different settings. There will be opportunities to phograph from early morning to dusk, to see and discuss examples of effective design and composition, to share techniques and to comment on the resulting images. You will have time to use your camera to explore the area around The Lodge and to participate in excursions to different parts of the island. You are expected to use a triipod and understand the basics of shutter speed, aperture, depth of field and downloading images. You are encourage to bring a lap top with photo adjustment software, if you have one, as there will be time for some computer darkroom work.

Wayne is a professional photographer who was at first reluctant to switch to digital technology and now has completely embraced it. He has been displayed in solo and groups shows. As well as exploring the Quinte Area, Wayne has searched for subjects, patterns and textures in urban and rural landscapes across Canada and in his travels outside the country. He has contributed to newspapers, magazines, calendars and books and enjoys interacting with students in his digital photography workshops at Loyalist College.
