Birding on Amherst Island

Amherst Island has been a top birder destination for many years.  It is especially popular in the winter when it is visited by a variety of owls.  The Lodge on Amherst Island offers the perfect retreat for those seeking a birding adventure.  We are located on Amherst Island, twenty-two kilometers west of Kingston in Lake Ontario.  A short car ferry ride brings two bird santuaries: The Owl Woods and Kingston Field Naturalist Nature Reserve.  You are free to explore with binoculars or camera.

You can drive around the island and view both wildlife and farm animals up close.  The island has  a large deer population, and sheep, beef, and dairy farms.  Or, you can walk among the trees in quiet solitude.  Whatever your choice, The Lodge wants to help make your stay one of pleasure, relaxation, and interest.  Whether you’re a group of one or ten The Lodge wants to make your stay memorable.

Looking for a guided tour? Ask about “Janets’s Jaunts”, a 1 hour or 3 hour tour by a remarkable island bird expert.  There is a fee for the tour.  Please book in advance.
